What is Schedule 40 Pipe?
They are widely used in applications such as air, water, oil, and natural gas transportation. These pipes offer strong resistance to corrosion especially from chloride ions. The lower carbon content in schedule 40 steel pipes makes them easier to weld and minimizes the risk of localized rusting. Made from high-grade stainless steel, including 304, 316 & 316L, stainless schedule 40 pipes are ideal for plumbing, chemical processing, marine use & structural applications. The smooth finish and reliability make sch 40 stainless pipes suitable for clean & sanitary systems. As per ANSI B36.10 standards, several wall thickness schedules are available in types including Sch10, Sch20, Sch30, Sch40, Sch60, Sch80, Sch100, Sch120, Sch140 & Sch160.
Schedule 40 SS pipes are especially preferred for smaller diameter lines such as the 1-inch and offer excellent performance in low to medium-pressure systems. Depending on the pipe size, the weight can vary, typically around 1.68 lbs per foot.

What does NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) stand for?
The NPS size represents the pipe’s approximate inside diameter; if the schedule number on a set size is changed, the inside diameter (ID) but not the outside diameter (OD) is affected (OD). Nominal Pipe Sizing was developed by the American Standard Association to replace the previously employed Iron Pipe Sizing. For high or low pressures and temperature pipes, this North American standard is employed.

Chemical Composition of Schedule 40 Steel Pipe
Schedule 40 pipe is divided in types based on its nominal wall thickness rather than the grade of the material. It means that the chemical composition of a Schedule 40 pipe can vary. Typically, they are made from low-carbon steel, most commonly A53 grade steel.
The SCH 40 pipe thickness is designed to handle a variety of pressures to use for numerous applications. For instance, seamless weld type S A53 steel pipes may have varying chemical compositions based on the type of weld but they generally follow specific guidelines for elements such as carbon, manganese & others. To determine the specific sch 40 pipe dimensions you need, it is essential to refer to the relevant charts & standards. These will provide detailed information on the thickness & diameter of the pipes ensuring you select the right dimensions for your project requirements. It is crucial for maintaining the integrity & performance of the piping system.
- Carbon – 0.25% (max)
- Manganese – 0.95% (max)
- Phosphorous – 0.05% (max)
- Sulfur – 0.045% (max)
- Copper – 0.4% (max)
- Nickel – 0.4% (max)
- Chromium – 0.4% (max)
- Molybdenum – 0.15% (max)
- Vanadium – 0.08% (max)
Schedule 40 Pipe Grades
Schedule 40 steel pipe is manufactured by using a variety of grades to meet specific industry needs to generate reliable performance. These schedule 40 pipe grades are defined by their chemical composition & mechanical properties ranging from general construction to high pressure fluid transmission. These are the most widely used schedule 40 steel pipe grades for applications. Made from low carbon steel with elements like manganese, phosphorus & sulfur to offer excellent strength, weldability & durability.
- ASTM A53 Grade A & B: These are the most widely used schedule 40 steel pipe grades for applications. Made from low carbon steel with elements like manganese, phosphorus & sulfur to offer excellent strength, weldability & durability.
- ASTM A106 Grade B: ASTM A106 Grade B is made from seamless carbon steel. It includes elements such as silicon, chromium & copper to maintain stability under elevated temperatures to use in refineries & power plants.
- API 5L Grade B: It is used extensively in the oil and gas sector for transporting petroleum, gas & water. With a strong carbon-manganese base and added elements for durability to ensures reliable fluid handling under pressure.
- ASTM A333 Grade 6: Engineered for low-temperature environments, A333 Grade 6 is a sch 40 pipe grade with excellent impact toughness. It contains nickel and chromium for enhanced cold resistance, commonly used in cryogenic systems and arctic pipelines.
- ASTM A500 Grade B: This grade is used primarily for structural applications including bridges & buildings. Made from carbon steel with manganese & copper, ASTM A500 Grade B schedule 40 steel pipes are valued for their structural integrity and formability.
