What Are Copper Nickel Alloys?

Copper nickel, also written as Cu-Ni or cupronickel, is a family of copper-based alloys in which nickel is the main alloying element. The principal marine grades also contain controlled iron and manganese additions. These additions are important because the final corrosion and erosion behaviour depends on the complete standard chemistry, not only on the nominal copper-to-nickel ratio.

The two main product families on this page are 90/10 and 70/30. C70600 is the more widely used and more economical marine grade. C71500 contains more nickel and is generally stronger, so it may be specified for more demanding flow, pressure or naval service. The project engineer should confirm grade selection against water chemistry, velocity, temperature, fabrication method and the governing design code.

Industries We Serve

  • Shipbuilding and marine systems: Used for seawater piping, cooling lines, deck systems, valves, flanges and related components where the specified Cu-Ni grade meets the required velocity and corrosion conditions.
  • Heat exchangers and condensers: Selected for condenser and heat-exchanger tubes that transfer heat while operating with seawater or brackish cooling water.
  • Offshore oil and gas: Applied in platform seawater systems, firewater lines, utility piping and splash-zone components after project-specific corrosion review.
  • Power generation: Used in condensers, cooling-water circuits and auxiliary systems where water chemistry and flow conditions support copper-nickel service.
  • Desalination and water treatment: Considered for seawater intake, transfer and heat-recovery equipment where chloride exposure is continuous.
  • Chemical and process plants: Used for selected heat-transfer and piping duties after compatibility is checked against the exact chemical composition, temperature and concentration.

Testing and Documentation

The required documentation should be stated with the enquiry. Depending on the product form and project, the purchase order may call for a Mill Test Certificate, heat-number traceability, chemical analysis, mechanical testing, dimensional inspection, hydrostatic or pneumatic testing for tubular products, non-destructive testing, PMI, or third-party inspection. Lakshya Steel should confirm the available test and certificate package before the order is finalised.

Frequently Asked Questions About Copper Nickel Products

What is the difference between Copper Nickel 90/10 and 70/30?
Copper Nickel 90/10 is commonly supplied as UNS C70600 and contains about 10% nickel, while Copper Nickel 70/30 is UNS C71500 and contains about 30% nickel. The 70/30 grade is generally stronger and may suit more demanding flow or naval service. Final selection must follow the project design, water chemistry and product standard.
Which copper nickel grade is commonly used for seawater piping?
UNS C70600, commonly called Cu-Ni 90/10, is widely used for seawater piping because it balances marine corrosion resistance, fabrication and cost. UNS C71500 may be specified when the design needs higher strength or more demanding operating conditions. The engineer should still check flow velocity, temperature, sulfide exposure and the applicable piping code.
Which copper nickel product forms are available?
Lakshya Steel’s copper nickel range includes grade-specific pages for welded pipes, tubes, sheets, plates, flanges, rods and bars in Cu-Ni 90/10 and Cu-Ni 70/30. Availability, dimensions and standards vary by form. Start with the appropriate grade hub, then provide the required size, temper, quantity and inspection requirements for confirmation.
Which standards apply to copper nickel products?
The standard depends on the product form. ASTM B111 is commonly used for condenser and heat-exchanger tube, B466 for seamless pipe and tube, B467 for welded pipe, B122 or B171 for flat products, and B151 for rod, bar and forgings. Flanges and fittings also require a separate dimensional standard or project specification.
What information is needed for a copper nickel quotation?

Provide the UNS grade, product form, ASTM, ASME, EN, DIN or EEMUA standard, size, wall or plate thickness, length, quantity, temper, testing, certification and delivery destination. For piping components, add the schedule, pressure class, facing or end connection and drawing. This allows the quotation to match the actual engineering requirement rather than a generic grade price.
