Detailed Information

As a compound or a solution, an alloy is a metallic material made up of two or more elements. The constituents of alloys are usually metals, however carbon, a nonmetal, is a necessary component of steel. Typically, alloys are made by melting a combination of components. Alloys have been valued since ancient times, with brass (copper and zinc) and bronze (copper and tin) being particularly valuable. The alloy steels, which are roughly described as steels having substantial quantities of elements other than iron and carbon, are the most important nowadays. Chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, tungsten, vanadium, and boron are the most common alloying elements in steel. Hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, magnetizability, and ductility are just a few of the unique qualities found in alloy steels. Coinage is mostly made of nonferrous alloys, such as copper–nickel, bronze, and aluminium alloys. Because silicon increases strength while reducing corrosion resistance, it may be regarded a contaminant or an useful component in aluminium, depending on the application.
Commercial and trade alloys, on the other hand, often require more processing and are created by combining molten metals in a controlled atmosphere. Depending on the characteristics of the components being utilised, the method for merging molten metals or mixing metals with non-metals varies considerably. Because metal elements have such a wide range of heat and gas tolerance, parameters including component metal melting temperatures, impurity levels, mixing environment, and alloying technique are all important considerations for a successful alloy process.

What is the difference between 90/10 and 70/30 copper-nickel?

CuNi 90/10 is more economical and offers good corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, ideal for standard marine piping and heat exchangers. CuNi 70/30 provides higher strength and better performance in aggressive or high-velocity seawater, commonly used in offshore and desalination systems.
