Monel is a metal superalloy with a nickel content of 65% – 70%, a copper content of 20% – 29%, and manganese content of 5%. Monel is a series of nickel-copper alloys including tiny quantities of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. Nickel content ranges from 52% to 67%. Because it contains less than 60% copper, monel is not a cupronickel alloy.

Characteristics of Monel

Extremely corrosion-resistant. Monel is well-known for its resistance to corrosion and rust. It’s corrosion-resistant and acid-resistant, and some alloys can even endure a fire in pure oxygen.

It possesses superior strength compared to many other metals, including steel.
Monel exhibits malleability, allowing it to be shaped and formed into various components.
It has a low thermal expansion coefficient, meaning it expands minimally when exposed to heat.
Monel is highly resistant to alkalis, which are strong bases.

Market Applications

Monel began to be phased out in the 1950s in favor of stainless steel, which could make the same shapes at a lower cost (due to the use of less nickel).
