Stainless steel is not one material that works for every job. A grade used for general fabrication may not be suitable for a marine system, chemical plant or high-temperature application. 1. How do I choose the correct stainless steel grade?
Start with the process medium, chloride level, temperature, required strength, fabrication route, cleaning requirement and product form. Grade 304 suits many general uses, 316 adds molybdenum for selected chloride exposure, stabilized grades address heat-affected service and duplex grades provide higher strength. Confirm the choice against the governing standard.
2. What is the difference between austenitic, ferritic and martensitic stainless steel?
Austenitic grades are generally formable and weldable with broad corrosion resistance. Ferritic grades are magnetic and often used in appliances, exhaust and heat-related applications. Martensitic grades can be heat treated for hardness and strength. Their corrosion, toughness and fabrication characteristics differ, so family names are not interchangeable.
3. Which standards cover stainless steel products?
Common references include ASTM A240 for flat products, A276 or A479 for bars, A312 for pipe, A213 or A249 for tube, A182 for forged flanges and A403 for butt-weld fittings. The complete grade, product form, dimensions, condition and testing must be stated.
4. Is 316 stainless steel always better than 304?
No. Grade 316 offers improved resistance in some chloride and process environments because of molybdenum, but it is not universally required or immune to corrosion. Grade 304 may be more suitable for many general applications. Selection should consider environment, cleaning, fabrication, availability and lifecycle cost.
5. What documents should be requested with stainless steel products?
Depending on the project, request a mill test certificate, heat-number traceability, chemical and mechanical results, PMI, intergranular-corrosion testing, dimensional inspection, surface-finish records and third-party inspection.
