Stainless steel is a metal alloy composed of steel and other elements including chromium, nickel, molybdenum, silicon, aluminium, and carbon. Chrome steel’s basic component is iron, which is combined with carbon to make steel. Chromium is added to make it rust-resistant. The inclusion of nickel improves corrosion resistant characteristics, especially when used aggressively. Localized corrosion resistance against scarring is provided by the inclusion of molybdenum. In order to improve the characteristics and structure of stainless steel, other alloying metals such as copper, titanium, and vanadium are added. Alloy 420 has a greater carbon content than Alloy 410, which is specifically intended to improve toughness and hardness. Our 420 grade provides full corrosion resistance only when hardened; they have high ductility when annealed but may be toughened up to 50 RHC when hardened. Temperatures exceeding 700°F are not typically advised for tempering, therefore these Grade 420 must be warmed before welding and annealed thereafter. Our Type 420 has the best corrosion resistance when it is fully cured or totally cured and stress eased.
