Stainless steel is a metal alloy composed of steel and other elements including chromium, nickel, molybdenum, silicon, aluminium, and carbon. Chrome steel’s basic component is iron, which is combined with carbon to make steel. Chromium is added to make it rust-resistant. The inclusion of nickel improves corrosion resistant characteristics, especially when used aggressively. Localized corrosion resistance against scarring is provided by the inclusion of molybdenum. In order to improve the characteristics and structure of stainless steel, other alloying metals such as copper, titanium, and vanadium are added.

At high temperatures, Stainless 317 L has a strong tensile and creep strength. It has been utilised in the chemical process industries to handle a variety of chemicals due to its superior corrosion resistance. In particular applications where contamination must be kept to a minimum, it offers superior corrosion resistance. 317L was created particularly to withstand the assault of sulphurous acid compounds more efficiently. However, its demonstrated capacity to resist corrosion has greatly expanded its applicability, and it is now utilised in a variety of different industrial applications. In a wide variety of chemicals, 317L has good corrosion resistance, particularly in acidic chloride conditions like those found in pulp and paper mills. When compared to 316L stainless steel, higher amounts of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum improve resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion. With the addition of molybdenum alloys, resistance rises. At temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C), 317L is resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations up to 5%. This alloy offers exceptional resistance to higher concentration solutions at temperatures below 100°F (38°C).
