Grade 316 square bars cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but improved mechanical properties can be obtained by cold working, particularly in acid pipe runs, heat exchangers and chemical processing plants. The most common applications of these stainless steels UNS S31600 square bars are piping and fittings, reactor autoclaves, valves, condensers and heat exchangers. Even after welding, these DIN 1.4401 stainless steel square bars show only slightly lower impact strength.

Alloy 316Ti square bars can be used for extended periods at elevated temperatures without compromising their corrosion resistance. The role of titanium alloy addition in Grade 316Ti square bars is discussed and compared with alternative low carbon 316 grades. Titanium stabilized AISI 316Ti square bars may also be prone to “knife line attack” in the heat affected zones of the welds very close to the fusion zone where the carbonitrides have redissolved in the solid steel matrix. This happens when the metal adjacent to the weld is heated to a high temperature (greater than 2100 degrees F) so that the titanium carbides in UNS S31635 stainless steel square bars are dissolved and then exposed to temperatures in the sensitizing area (800 degrees F – 1500 degrees F; 425 degrees C – 815 degrees C).
