What is Stainless Steel 316 and 316Ti Plate?

Stainless Steel 316 Plate

Stainless Steel 316 plate is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel (like 304 and 310 levels, with the only addition being molybdenum) with a considerable degree of versatility and therefore use. The molybdenum (typically 2-3%) additive affords a significant improvement in corrosion resistance (particularly for pitting and crevice corrosion) in chloride environments making 316 stainless steel plate a great choice for many aggressive environments, such as marine and coastal environments.

316 stainless steel plate has many distinguishing characteristics such as:

  • Austenitic Structure (300 Series): Like other 300 series stainless steels, SS 316 has an austenitic microstructure which undoubtedly provides it with a decent mix of toughness, weldability, and formability. It also retains its toughness and ductility to cryogenic temperatures.
  • Non-Magnetic (generally): In its annealed (fully softened) condition SS 316 is non-magnetic. However, if cold worked extensively, SS 316 can have some magnetic properties.
  • Not Hardenable by Heat Treatment: SS 316 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, strength and hardness can be increased utilizing cold working techniques to change the microstructure.
  • Good Weldability and Formability: because SS 316 has an austenitic structure, it is provided a good combination of weldability using commonly used fusion welding processes and formability used to manufacture finished samples.
  • Corrosion Resistance: with regard to general corrosion, using the additive of Molybdenum, SS 316 plate offers better resistance to specific forms of corrosion, however, like other austenitic stainless steels, chloride stress corrosion can occur.

Stainless Steel 316Ti Plate:

316Ti stainless steel plate is a titanium-stabilized version of Grade 316. The primary advantage and defining feature of 316Ti stainless steel plate is its enhanced resistance to sensitization (intergranular corrosion) when exposed to temperatures in the range of 425-815°C (800-1500°F).

Important characteristics of 316Ti stainless steel plate include:

  • Titanium Stabilization: By adding titanium (typically at least five times the quantity of carbon), 316Ti can form stable titanium carbides, which prevents the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during either welding or extended exposure to elevated temperatures; this helps to stop chromium depletion and retain corrosion resistance in or around welded zones or after exposure to high temperatures.
  • Improved Performance in High-Temperature Applications: 316Ti stainless steel plate is also favored for intermittent or prolonged use at higher temperatures because of its resistance to sensitization. Standard 316 has the potential to become sensitized depending on the temperature and time of exposure.
  • Pressure Vessel Applications: The stability of 316Ti at elevated temperatures is frequently found to be desirable and often specified in the manufacture of pressure vessels in many countries.
  • Similar Base Properties to 316: In terms of structure, 316Ti is fully austenitic and shares many of the fully excellent corrosion resistance, strength and fabricating attributes of standard 316 stainless steels. It is also generally not magnetic in the annealed condition.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The base corrosion resistance (to general corrosion, pitting, etc) is similar to 316 but the most important attribute of 316Ti stainless steel sheet and plate is the corrosion resistance the material maintains after thermal exposure, mainly in conditions of concern for intergranular attack, for example, dilute sulfuric and phosphoric acids) after welding.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between 316 and 316 Ti?

316Ti is a stabilized version of 316 stainless steel, designed for higher temperature applications. 316 may form carbides at elevated temperatures, increasing the risk of intragranular corrosion.

What is 316Ti stainless steel?

316Ti (UNS S31635) is a titanium-stabilized, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. It offers greater resistance to general and pitting/crevice corrosion compared to standard chromium-nickel stainless steels like 304.

What is stainless steel 316 used for?

Stainless steel 316, with excellent resistance to chlorides and acids, is widely used in medical implants, food processing, and preparation environments due to its superior corrosion resistance.

Which is better 304 or 316 stainless steel?

Grade 304 accounts for the vast majority of stainless steel purchased around the world. Grade 304 has the standard corrosion resistance, formability, strength, and maintenance ease that we’ve come to expect from stainless. Grade 316, while in second place in terms of the total quantities sold, has tremendously better corrosion resistance to salts (chlorides) and acids.

What is the price of ss316 sheet?

The typical price for a 316 stainless steel sheet ranges from approximately ₹240 to ₹280 per kilogram.

Is 316 stainless steel expensive?

316 stainless steel is an alloy of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. It is more expensive than other types of stainless steel, but it is also more resistant to corrosion.
