Chrome steel’s basic component is iron, which is combined with carbon to make steel. Chromium is added to make it rust-resistant. The inclusion of nickel improves corrosion resistant characteristics, especially when used aggressively. Localized corrosion resistance against scarring is provided by the inclusion of molybdenum. In order to improve the characteristics and structure of stainless steel, other alloying metals such as copper, titanium, and vanadium are added. The titanium-stabilized variant of 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel is 316Ti (UNS S31635). Traditional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, such as 304, are less resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion than 316 alloys. At high temperatures, they also have greater creep, stress-rupture, and tensile strength. Sensitisation, or the production of grain boundary chromium carbides at temperatures between 900 and 1500°F (425 to 815°C), can occur in high carbon Alloy 316 stainless steel, resulting in intergranular corrosion. The addition of molybdenum to stainless steel 316 increases its corrosion resistance. In chloride settings, this is especially true for pitting and crevice corrosion.
