What is Molybdenum Sheet & Plate?

Molybdenum Sheet is a fine sheet fabricated of high purity molybdenum alloys. Hot rolling methods are often used in forming these sheets which are then polished to diverse finishes with respect to the desired usage. Lakshya International is a major supplier of Molybdenum Sheets and Plates, and its product lines of the material include a variety of grades and widths that suit the international requirements.

The ASTM B386 specification sets the standards of Molybdenum Sheets and Plates in terms of composition, mechanical properties, and chemical properties. Plates with a thickness of over 0.004 inches are categorized as ASTM B386 Type 361 Plates and are usually known as Moly Plates. The molybdenum content in these plates and sheets is more than 99.5 percent, and therefore, has great strength and high durability. Molybdenum is an irregularly silvery-grey metallic element, which has a high melting temperature of 2623°C and a density of 10.2 g/cm 3. Molybdenum (symbol Mo, atomic number 42) is a chemically stable material that can be used even in an acidic or high-temperature environment, which allows it to be used in the production of alloys and high-strength steels. Moly Sheets and Plates are been constructed as strong, durable and ductile in mechanics which gives stability to the stress and does not cause changes in shape or performance when subjected to the extreme temperatures.

Mo1 and Mo2 Grades:

  • Mo1: Commercially pure grade of molybdenum that has no less than 99.95% of molybdenum. They are perfect in applications that need high corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity.
  • Mo2: It has a bit more impurities, such as thorium or titanium, to enhance mechanical strength without compromising on performance at high temperatures. Mo2 is used in high-stress and structural applications.

Molybdenum sheets and Moly plates are used in high-temperature applications because they have high thermal conductivity and low corrosion rates. They are able to endure high temperatures without deformation and damage. Other products of molybdenum in commercial purity are Moly Strips and Molybdenum Foil Strips, used in heat shields, heat sinks, molybdenum boats, electric power semiconductors and vacuum devices. Moly Plates of ASTM B386 are also used in light source plates used in high-power electric lights.

Manufacturing Process of Molybdenum Sheets & Plates

Molybdenum sheets (Moly Sheets), commonly fabricated with tungsten, are a high-performance metal that finds a wide usage in the industrial sector since it has excellent thermal, mechanical, and chemical characteristics. Molybdenum sheet metals should have controlled material characteristics in order to produce high-end product performance.

The central part of the process is powder metallurgy, as a result of which high-purity molybdenum powders and alloys are obtained. Raw materials include molybdenite (MoS2), a sulfide ore that has molybdenum in 0.01%-0.25%. This ore is crushed and concentrated by flotation, resulting in molybdenum sulfide, which is roasted to form molybdic oxide (MoO3) containing at least 57% molybdenum.

The hydrogen reduction of the oxide occurs in two stages:

1. The MoO3 is reduced to molybdenum dioxide (MoO2).

2. The hydrogen in moving tubes or a rotary furnace at 1000-1100 °C further removes the moisture in MoO2 to produce high-purity molybdenum metal powder.

The resultant powder is then converted to semi-finished products through some sophisticated processes like mixing, pressing, deformation and controlled heating. The sheets and plates, or any other molybdenum parts, are cut and manufactured according to the exact customer requirements to maintain steady performance, strength and thermal stability. The same thing happens to molybdenum that is obtained as a by-product of copper mining, except that during copper flotation, molybdenum disulfide is recovered, which is then reduced to molybdic oxide, followed by reduction to pure molybdenum metal.

Lakshya Steel is a manufacturer of high-quality molybdenum sheets and plates at competitive rates, produced with the highest quality of the products to guarantee the accuracy of the dimensions, purity, and reliability. Customised molybdenum sheet metal: meet us today.

Frequently Asked Questions About Molybdenum Sheet & Plate

What industrial applications are molybdenum sheets used for?
Molybdenum sheets find application in high-stress and high-temperature applications such as heat shields, furnace components, vacuum resources, semiconductor parts, and high-power plates of light sources. They have high thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength, which make them suitable for extreme industrial conditions.
What is the purity of your molybdenum sheets and why does it matter?
Our molybdenum sheets have a purity of 99.95% or higher. High purity ensures uniform mechanical strength, thermal performance, and corrosion resistance, which is critical for precision industrial applications and long-lasting performance.
Are surface treatments or coatings available for molybdenum sheets?
Yes, we can offer surface treatment and surface coating like polishing, passivation, or your own finishes to increase corrosion resistance, surface quality as well as high-temperature performance according to your needs.
How do molybdenum sheets compare to other refractory metals in performance?
Molybdenum sheets have a high melting point, low thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, and high corrosion resistance, which makes them competitive with tungsten and tantalum. They are commonly chosen due to a combination of cost, machinability, and durability.
What sizes, thicknesses, and grades of molybdenum sheets and plates do you offer?
We provide commercially pure molybdenum, Mo1, Mo2, TZM, and chrome-moly sheets and plates in varying thickness, width and length. Specialized sizes and grades can be ordered upon request and to fit target industrial requirements.
How can I request an accurate price quote for molybdenum sheets or plates?
To get an accurate quote, provide details such as grade, size, thickness, quantity, and any custom requirements. Our sales team will prepare a detailed and competitive pricing estimate.

To get the detailed quote and other specifications about the material, like grade, size, thickness, quantity, and any custom requirements. Our sales team will develop an estimate of competitive pricing that is detailed.

Do you provide custom-cut lengths for molybdenum sheets and plates?
Absolutely. We also provide cut-to-length cuts based on your specification that will help you achieve the best use of the available material and reduce wastage.
What certifications and material documentation do you provide for molybdenum products?
We give complete material certifications such as ASTM/ASME compliance reports, chemical composition reports, mechanical property certificates, and quality inspection reports upon request.
Do you offer engineering and design support for custom molybdenum sheet applications?
Yes, we have a technical department that could offer you technical and design support in choosing the right grade, thickness, and finish to use in your applications in order to achieve the best performance and reliability.
