Duplex stainless steels are two phase alloys with a combination of the ferritic and austenitic properties providing corrosion resistance and mechanical strength for tough environments.Duplex 2205 round bar (also referred to as duplex 2205, UNS S31803/S32205, 1.4462 2205) is a duplex grade that is nitrogen strengthened. The intermediate between austenitic and ferritic (neither 304 nor 430) stainless steels are referred to as duplex. In S31803 bars, the microstructure is austenitic islands in a continuous ferritic matrix. The 2205 duplex stainless steel round bar was designed to overcome typical issues with corrosion of 300-series austenitic grades, and matches the requirements of ASTM 2205 specification.

The common advantages of 2205 duplex rod are; a wide range of corrosion resistance; great resistance against chloride stress-corrosion cracking; high strength, good weldability and formability, resistance against sulphide stress cracking; and high resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Close attention should be paid to chloride stress-corrosion cracking in duplex metallurgy. The duplex 2205 welding rod is very strong and reliable in welding. The goal in welding any duplex stainless steel is to get fusion and heat-affected regions identical to the base metal in terms of corrosion and impact toughness sufficient to be used in service.

High strength can limit machinability as the Duplex 2205 round bar is found to be useful in service. It is also hard and this further enhances the burden required in bending and forming and could necessitate more capacity equipment than austenitic stainless steels.Duplex 2205 is not used at temperatures above 300 C due to brittle forming phase and under -50 C due to ductile-to brittle.

Duplex 2205 is the most widely used grade of duplex (ferritic/austenitic) stainless steel in the industry. This alloy is nitrogen strengthened and this is also an advantage since nitrogen is used in enhancing corrosion resistance especially in welded structures. It contains higher Cr3Mo3Ni balance and a pitting resistance of about 35.8 – than 316L and 317L. Heat treated, ASTM 2205 has a microstructure consisting of about equal parts austenite and ferrite, the strength and corrosion resistance of which are typical of 2205 round bar.
