A36 is a type of mild steel known for its low carbon content, containing less than 0.3% carbon by weight. This characteristic makes Carbon Steel ASTM A36 steel particularly versatile, as it can be easily machined, welded, and shaped, making it highly practical for a wide range of applications. Additionally, the low carbon content means that heat treatment has a limited impact on the properties of A36 steel. Typically, A36 steel contains small amounts of various alloying elements, such as manganese, sulfur, phosphorus, and silicon. These elements are intentionally added to tailor A36 steel to possess specific chemical and mechanical properties. However, due to the absence of substantial quantities of nickel or chromium, A36 steel does not exhibit strong corrosion resistance.
ASTM A36 is the preferred choice for low-temperature applications across various industries. It falls under the category of mild and hot-rolled steel, boasting excellent welding properties. Its versatility makes it suitable for processes like grinding, drilling, and machining. Furthermore, ASTM A36 products are available in both cold-rolled and hot-rolled applications, catering to a wide range of industries. This alloy plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of various applications within these industries and is available in multiple forms, including rectangular, circular, angles, and squares.
The ASTM A36 Carbon Steel Plate and Sheet inherit a range of properties specific to the alloy used in their production. These properties include corrosion resistance, exceptional durability, high ductility, and remarkable tensile strength, making them highly sought-after in various industrial settings. Additionally, alloy steel plates possess a host of other desirable properties, making them indispensable in industries such as petrochemical, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, as well as pulp and paper.

A36 Equivalent:
A36 steel is manufactured to meet the standards established by ASTM, which are widely recognized in projects worldwide. However, in certain countries, structural projects may be required to adhere to standards set by a different regulatory body. For instance, when structural projects need plates that comply with EN standards, they may substitute A36 with S275, as it is generally considered an equivalent option.
While not precisely identical to ASTM A36, other structural grades of mild and HSLA steel can also be suitable for use in infrastructure projects. These grades often exhibit properties similar to A36.
Applications & Industries:
A36 steel plates are typically employed in structural applications due to their impressive strength-to-weight ratio and formability. These characteristics facilitate the shaping of A36 into a variety of structural components capable of withstanding substantial forces. Common infrastructure applications for A36 include bridge and building construction.
