Introduction to 304 Stainless Steel Tubes
Industrial piping and construction is an industry that is dependent on strong and versatile materials. The 304 stainless steel tubes are the most prominent of these, and they are considered the definite standard. Also known as merely 304 SS tubes, it is an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy which can be considered unparalleled in terms of performance, cost and workability. 304 stainless steel tubes are high-performance hollow cylindrical products fabricated from Grade 304 stainless steel. It is the most popular type of stainless steel in the world characterized by its composition, which, historically, consists of 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel, so that it is often called 18/8 stainless steel. The tubes offer a strong solution to the transportation of fluids, gases, and fine solids, or structural and aesthetic purposes.
Why SS 304 is the most widely used stainless steel grade?
It is the highest resistance to oxidation and corrosion in different atmospheric conditions such as the ones in food, chemical and domestic conditions that have made 304 stainless steel so popular. Moreover, it is highly drawable and highly weldable, thus extremely easy to cut into intricate shapes, which has a large manufacturing flexibility when compared to other alloys. When it is necessary to have an application that requires less carbon content to enhance post-weld corrosion resistance, the low-carbon type, 304L stainless steel tube, is frequently selected.
Importance of 304 stainless steel tubes in industry
The 304 stainless tubing is essential throughout the contemporary industry as it is a reliable solution that works well and lasts long. In complex instrumentation lines of the processes up to the grand scale architectural structures, the dependability of the 304 steel tube reduces maintenance and downtime.

Characteristics of 304 stainless steel tubes
Cementing the role of 304 SS tubes as the workhorse in the industry are associated with its unique characteristics.
- Corrosion Resistance: The high chromium content will form an invisible passive chromium oxide layer on the tube surface. The layer can withstand corrosive substances in general atmospheres and mild chemicals greatly increasing the life cycle of the 304 stainless steel tubes.
- Excellent Weldability: Grade 304 has better welding property and can be easily welded using all conventional fusion processes, and filler metals are not frequently required. It has low carbon content, which reduces the chances of intergranular corrosion occurring following welding.
- Bending / Forming: 304 stainless tubing is very ductile in nature, that is, it can be easily deep-drawn, spun, and shaped into complex components. This high level of formability is important to manufacturers of special components.
- Machining: Although 304 stainless steel has been reported to work harden easily, it has satisfactory machining and grinding performances when using appropriate tooling and cutting speed.
- Heat Treatment: Thermal treatment of this grade cannot be hardened. But to harden the material, its maximum ductility and corrosion resistance are regained by annealing (heating to 1010-1120degC and then rapidly cooling) following cold working or heavy welding.
- Wear Resistance:304 SS tubes have excellent wear and abrasion resistance, are durable against the conveying of abrasive fluids or in components of the structure where friction occurs.

Types of 304 Stainless Steel Tubes
The tube type is important and it depends on the pressure rating, environment and the cost consideration of the project. Our main product is the 304 stainless steel tubes which we group as seamless and welded.
SS 304 Seamless Tubing
A single round billet is pushed or drawn into a round billet until it reaches the necessary size, and is the raw material of 304 ss seamless tubing.
- Advantage: It is a uniformly-thickened wall, there is no welded seam and has the highest structural integrity and is therefore the best choice in high-pressure, high-temperature and corrosive environments such as oil and gas processing or heat exchangers.
- Uses: It can be used in critical sanitary uses specified by ASME BPE standards.
Lakshya Steel offers reliable supply of stainless steel 304 seamless tubes.
SS 304 Welded Tubes
A production process is used to make 304 SS welded tubes, whereby a flat strip of stainless steel (skelp) is rolled into a tube like shape and the edges are welded along the length using a fusion welding process.
- Advantage: They are less expensive, and they usually have smaller dimensional tolerances of the outer diameter. The contemporary welding systems (such as TIG) will make the weld seam powerful and defect-free.
- Uses: They are typically applied in non-pressure applications with high pressure not the main consideration like handrails, ornamental piping and conventional conveyance systems.
We are leading suppliers and stockists of stainless steel 304 welded tubes.
Shape of 304 Stainless Steel Tubes
There are 304 stainless steel tubes that are produced on a variety of geometric profiles that can be used based on their particular functional or aesthetic needs.
- 304 Stainless Steel Round Tube: It is the most common one. Round tubing is the best in terms of fluid dynamics and is generally the most robust shape in use under internal pressure. Dimensions are either of standard pipe schedules (as Sch 10, Sch 40), or of particular tube size (OD x Wall Thickness).
- SS 304 Square Tubes: Square tubing is rigid structurally and is commonly used in frameworks, architecturally designed elements and furniture. Its flat sides make it easy to join and attach it to other flat parts.
- 304 SS Rectangular Tubing: This type of tubes resembles square tubes but has a higher space to span in one direction, which is appropriate in a structural load-bearing design in construction and infrastructure where strength and reduced weight is required.
Surface finish of 304 Stainless Steel Tube
The aesthetic appeal of 304 SS tubes, their resistance to corrosion and suitability in hygienic environments are highly influenced by the finish on the surface.
The fabrication process consists of a series of finishing processes:
- Mill Finish (Unpolished): This is the un-polished fabricated surface. Although practical, it can be rough to be used in sanitary or decorative purposes.
- Brushed/Satin Finish (180320 Grit): This finish, by being achieved by mechanical abrasion, is the most common finish of architectural and food grade 304 stainless tubing. A 180-grit finish offers a smooth yet satin finish that lowers the visibility of the fingerprints and other minor weak spots.
- Mirror Polish (400+ Grit): This is a very reflective mirror finish commonly used in the pharmaceutical, dairy and semiconductor industries as the work has to be extremely smooth (low Ra value) to avoid bacterial growth and contamination. The natural corrosion resistance of the material is greatly increased by a highly polished 304 steel tube.
Applications of SS 304 Tubes
304 stainless steel tubes are very versatile as they have a wide variety of industrial applications:
- Food and Beverage Processing: Milk, wine, beer and other liquids are used in sanitary piping systems with 304 SS tubes being the standard in that processing.
- Heat Exchangers and Condensers: The 304 stainless tubing is the ideal choice in these temperature management systems because of its great heat conductivity and resistance to corrosion.
- Architectural and Structural: Applied to ornamental and strong components like railings, handrails, supports and window frames.
- Chemical and Petrochemical: Working with mild chemicals and transportation of fluids in the non-marine environment.
- Textile and Paper: It is used in the equipment in the machine manufacturing processes where wash-down cycles occur very often.
304 vs 304L Stainless Steel Tubes: Understanding the Difference
Although these terms are interchangeable, the difference between 304 and 304L is very important when it comes to welding:
- 304 SS Tube: Carbon is not more than 0.08%. This is the high-strength standard.
- 304L Stainless Steel Tube: contains not more than 0.03% of Carbon. The ‘L’ stands for Low Carbon. This low carbon level decreases the precipitation of chromium carbides during welding which is referred to as sensitization. This is important in thick areas or elements that cannot be annealed after welding as it eliminates localized corrosion around the weld line.
In the majority of general use applications, either grade is used. To weld extensively or with high stress, in corrosive conditions, the safer wider range of stainless steel 304L tubes is the choice.
304 Stainless Steel Tube Price
The price of the 304 stainless steel tube varies depending on various economic and material factors on the global environment. To make project costs calculations, it is essential to comprehend the following:
- Raw Material Costs: The Nickel (Ni) and Chromium (Cr) are the key alloying elements and the prices of these elements are the only largest factor that affects the SS 304 tube price. The 304 stainless steel tube price is directly affected by the volatility of market prices of these commodities.
- Manufacturing Process: The 304 ss seamless tubing is generally a costlier product compared to the welded tubing because the process is more difficult and intense (piercing a solid billet compared to roll/welding a strip).
- Size and Form: Bigger diameter and heavier the wall tubes consumes more material and time to manufacture which makes them more expensive. Premium can also be charged on custom shapes such as complex 304 SS rectangular tubing.
- Surface Finish Requirements: Tubes that will have a high-polish finish (such as 320 grit or mirror polish) go through other labor intensive processes, which contribute to the ultimate cost.
