Information
EN8, also known as 080M40, is a popular medium carbon steel known for its balanced properties of strength and machinability. With a carbon content of 0.36-0.44%, EN8 Material offers higher tensile strength compared to mild steel, making it suitable for a wide range of engineering applications. It is often supplied in an untreated or normalized condition but can also be hardened and tempered for enhanced mechanical properties.EN8 steel is versatile and can be easily machined, even in its hardened state. It is also suitable for surface hardening through flame or induction processes, resulting in improved wear resistance.
Lakshya Steel is a leading manufacturer and supplier of EN8 Carbon Steel, 080M40 Medium Carbon Steel offers moderate tensile strength, ranging from 500 to 800 MPa. EN8 is typically provided in its untreated or normalized condition. It can be hardened by quenching and tempering in limited sections and can also undergo flame or induction hardening to achieve a surface hardness of 50-55 HRC, offering good wear resistance.EN8 steel is easy to machine in any condition and can be welded using appropriate welding techniques and procedures.
EN8/080M40 steel, a widely used unalloyed medium carbon steel, recognized as ’40’ carbon steel under the British standard BS 970, it offers medium tensile strength. EN8 is commonly supplied in an untreated or normalized condition, but it is also suitable for use in hardened and tempered states, achieving tensile ranges of 625-775 MPa (Q) and 700-850 MPa (R).
For enhanced surface hardness and wear resistance, EN8 can undergo flame or induction hardening, resulting in a hardness of 50-55 HRC. Its homogeneous metallurgical structure provides stable machining properties, making EN8 easy to machine in any condition.
For sections larger than 65mm, achieving good heat treatment results with EN8 steel is possible, though a decrease in mechanical properties may occur near the center of the bar. To maintain optimal properties, it is recommended to supply larger EN8 steel sections in the untreated condition. Heat treatment should be performed after initial stock removal to ensure better mechanical properties towards the core of the material.
Detailed Information
Manufacturer & Supplier of EN8 Carbon Steel in Mumbai, India
EN8 carbon steel is common medium carbon steel with medium tensile strength. It is stronger than mild steel because it hardens all the way through. EN8 carbon steel is also easy to work with no matter what.
Most of the time, EN8 steels are used in their original, untreated state. But EN8 steels can have their surfaces hardened even more through induction processes, making parts that are more resistant to wear. When steel EN8 is heat-treated, it has good, homogeneous metallurgical structures that make it easy to machine.
It may still be possible to get good heat treatment results on sections that are bigger than 65 mm, but it should be noted that the mechanical properties would get worse as you get closer to the middle of the bar. Because of this, EN8 steel materials in larger sizes should be supplied in their untreated state, and any heat treatment should be done after the initial stock is removed. This should give the core better mechanical properties.
EN8 Steel Specifications
EN8 steel grade is part of the BS 970-1955 standard. This is a standard for wrought steel used in mechanical engineering and related fields. There are some other common steel grades in the BS 970 standards, such as EN9, EN19, EN24, EN36, etc. And in BS 970-1991, grade 080M40 steel is the one that is most like it.
EN8 carbon steel is available in these shapes:
We could supply EN8 steel in the form of a bright round bar that has been drawn or turned, as well as round hot rolled, hexagonal, square, steel flats and plates.
- EN8 Steel Round Bar: 8mm-1600mm
- EN8 Steel Cold Drawn Bar: 5mm-70mm
- EN8 Carbon Steel Flat & Plate: 10-1500mm x 200-3000mm

EN8/080M40 Carbon Steel Forging
Carefully heat the EN8 steel, then raise the temperature to 1050°C so that it can be forged. Don’t forge anything below 850°C. After forging, en8 steel should be cooled slowly, ideally in a furnace.
Carbon Steel EN8 Heat Treatment
EN8 steel is usually sold untreated, but it can also be ordered normalized or heat-treated at the end, which is good for a wide range of uses.
Tempering – Carbon steel EN8 or 080M40 can be hardened by heating it between 550°C and 660°C (1022°F and 1220°F) for about an hour for every inch of thickness, then letting it cool in oil or water.
Normalizing – Bright mild steel EN8 is normalized at 830-860°C (1526°F-1580°F), and then it is cooled in air.
Quenching – Putting the steel in oil or water after heating it to this temperature will make it harder.

RFQ for EN8 Steel
FAQ
Is EN8 better than mild steel?
EN8 is preferred over mild steel when higher tensile strength and hardness are required. Its enhanced properties make it an excellent choice for manufacturing components like axles, gears, and shafts, where durability and performance are crucial.
Can EN8 Be Welded?
Yes, EN8 (080M40/080A42) can be welded, but it requires careful consideration. This grade provides higher strength, toughness, and wear resistance compared to mild steel. Welding EN8 is feasible with guidance from a knowledgeable welding consumables professional. However, it is not recommended to weld through-hardened, flame-hardened, or induction-hardened EN8 materials, as these treatments can affect the weld’s integrity and performance.
What is the density of EN8 material?
The density of EN8 material is 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³).
