Detailed Information
AISI 4130 Alloy Steel Supplier in India
The ASTM A29 standard defines AISI 4130 as a medium carbon, low alloy steel. ASTM 4140 steel, also known as Chromoly steel or chrome-moly steel, is Chromoly steel with a nominal carbon content of 0.28-0.33% a chromium content of 0.8-1.1%, and molybdenum content of 0.15-0.25% It is similar to 4140 steel, which has a greater carbon content (0.28-0.33%), improving weldability at the expense of through-thickness strength. It may also be machined easily with the right heat treatment. The ductility of ASTM 4130 alloy steel can be increased by annealing it. AISI 4130 steel is often offered as a round bar that has been hardened and tempered.
The AISI/SAE 4130 steel grade is a flexible alloy with strong atmospheric corrosion resistance and adequate strength up to 315 degrees Celsius (600 degrees Fahrenheit). It has a strong overall balance of strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance. Lakshya International, as a major supplier of 4130 steel alloy material, is dependable in 4130 round bar and steel plate materials. Please see the ASTM 4130 steel material technical data below.

4130 Alloy Steel Forging
Between 1230 and 950 degrees Celsius (2250 and 1750 degrees Fahrenheit), ASTM A29 Grade 4130 steel should be forged. The smaller the grain size, the lower the forging finishing temperature. If the 4130 alloy steel is forged at too low a temperature, a non-uniform structure may occur in specific regions of the forged item, requiring a normalizing treatment before further heat treatment.
The Heat Treatment of AISI 4130 Steel
Annealing 4130 steel forgings can be accomplished by transferring the item directly from the forging operation to a furnace set at a sufficient temperature (about 860° C/1575° F) for annealing, and holding for a certain time, and then cooling the furnace. In this technique, a machining-friendly framework can be created. It’s preferable to use this treatment on parts with simple shapes. If the 4130 forging results in some portions finishing significantly cooler than others, a consistent structure will not be achieved, and a spheroidizing anneal at roughly 750 o C (1380 o F) may be utilized for optimal results. It is safe to assume that the ideal form of annealing treatment to utilize prior to machining will be determined solely by experience.
It should then be cooled in the furnace at a pace of less than 50 degrees per hour until it reaches 900 degrees, after which it should be cooled by air.
4130 Alloy Steel Normalization
The nominal normalization temperature for 4130 is 900 o C (1650 o F), followed by a 1600 o F soak and oil quench, but production experience may require a temperature of 50 o F (10 o C) higher or lower than this figure. In fact, the upper range of normalizing temperatures is used when forgings are normalized before being carburized or hardened and tempered. The lower temperature range is employed when normalizing the final heat treatment.
AISI 4130 Alloy Steel Hardening
At 1500 to 1600 o F (815 to 870 o C), the steel 4130 should be austenitized (all micro-components changed to austenite). The exact austenitizing temperature is determined by chemical composition, section size, and cooling method within the analytical range. Smaller 4130 pieces may be quenched in oil, whereas larger parts might be quenched in water.
4130 Steel Tempering
The actual tempering temperature will be determined by the qualities that are required. Depending on the desired strength level, alloy steel 4130 is tempered at temperatures ranging from 398°C to 565°C (750°F to 1050°F). The greater the strength, the lower the tempering temperature. Tempering should not be done between 200 and 420 degrees Celsius (400 and 790 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid embrittlement.
Machinability
By using traditional machining procedures, the AISI 4130 alloy can be easily machined. Simple shapes can be machined after a normalizing treatment, while more complicated shapes will need to be annealed. When the hardness of 4130 steel is increased, however, machining becomes problematic.
Welding
The weldability of ISI 4130 steel is excellent, and the alloy may be welded using any commercial process. In some cases, the material may require a post-weld stress relief heat treatment.
Low-hydrogen electrodes are recommended for welding, along with a preheat temperature of 150–260°C (300–500°F). Slowly cool down and relax as much as possible.
